Advair
This combination inhaler and bronchodilator is used for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The medication, Salmeterol, relaxes the muscles in the walls of the small air passages of the lung and keeps the air passage open making it easier to breathe. It belongs to a group of medications called bronchodilators.
Fluticasone belongs to a group of medications known as corticosteroids. Corticosteroids help open the airways and improve breathing causing a reduction of inflammation in the lungs and help reduce the swelling and irritation in the walls of those small air passages in the lungs.
It is important to remember that salmeterol - fluticasone is to be used for long-term relief and not intended for immediate relief. Inhalers that contain instant relief medications (e.g., salbutamol, terbutaline) will still be needed while using this medication.
