Effexor

Effexor, also known as Venlafaxine, belongs to an antidepressant class of medications known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Effexor helps patients who suffer from depression, abnormal anxiety, a generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. It works on the central nervous system to elevate moods and removes anxiety by increasing serotonin and norepinephrine, two chemicals found in parts of the brain.

It may take several weeks for the effects of the drug become fully beneficial. It should be taken once daily with food for 4 - 7 days.

If a dosage is missed, take it as soon as remembered or if you are close to the next dosage, skip the missed one and continue on the regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time.

Effexor should not be used if you are:

  • sensitive or allergic to Effexor or ingredients found in the tablet
  • taking and MAO inhibitor or have taken one in the last 14 days or will be taking one within 14 days of the last dose of Effexor

  • attempts at suicide or thoughts of suicide
  • chest pain
  • convulsions (seizures)
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • muscle pain or weakness
  • red or purple patches on skin
  • reddening, blistering, peeling, or loosening of skin and mucous membranes
  • signs of an allergic reaction (such as difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the face or throat)
  • swelling of the hands or feet with shortness of breath
