Actonel

Actonel is prescribed for patients dealing with osteoporosis, a disease causing brittle bones. Osteoporosis is caused when cells inside the bone, called oseoclasts, take calcium away from the bone quicker than the replenishment cells, osteoblasts, can inject the new calcium. This creates hollowed and brittle bones. Residronate, the active ingredient in Actonel, will slow the osteoclasts from pulling out the calcium allowing the osteoblasts time to catch up.

For women who are past menopause, the recommended dose for preventing osteoporosis and for treating and preventing osteoporosis caused by corticosteroid, use is 5 mg once daily or 35 mg once weekly.

For people with Paget's disease, the recommended dose is 30 mg once daily for two months.

It should be taken at least 30 minutes before or after eating and drinking anything other than plain water and not less than 30 minutes before bedtime.
