Synthroid

Synthroid, also known as levothyroxine, is a thyroid hormone supplement used to treat low thyroid hormone levels or hypothyroidism. It is a synthetic form of the chemical thyroxine, to replace the levels unable to be obtained by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland helps regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Synthriod is also used to treat goiter, which can happen when a person has hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery or cancer. Synthroid should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems.

It is important to take Synthroid with a full glass of water. The Synthroid tablet may be able to dissolve really quickly in the throat causing the tablet to swell resulting in choking and possible asphyxiation. It should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach and you should not eat for 30 minutes after dosage. If a dosage is missed, take it as soon as remembered or if you are close to the next dosage, skip the missed one and continue on the regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time.

Take the dose as prescribed everyday and do not stop suddenly even when feeling better unless otherwise told by your doctor.

Synthroid should not be used if you are:

  • allergic to levothyroxine or to any of the ingredients of Synthroid
  • a person who has acute thyrotoxicosis (too much thyroid hormone in their system)
  • having a heart attack
  • a person who has uncorrected adrenal insufficiency

You should contact your doctor if you experience any prolonged occurrences with any of these uncommon Synthroid side effects:

  • headache (severe) in children
  • skin rash or hives
  • chest pain
  • confusion
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • mood swings
  • muscle weakness
  • psychosis
  • restlessness (extreme)
  • yellow eyes or skin
  • shortness of breath

You may not be getting a high enough dosage if you are experiencing any of these side effects:

  • clumsiness
  • coldness
  • constipation
  • dry, puffy skin
  • listlessness
  • muscle aches
  • sleepiness
  • tiredness
  • weakness
  • weight gain

Many factors can influence the size and frequency of dosages, including body weight, personal needs, medical conditions and other medications. Be sure to contact your doctor when taking any medication. Doctors may prescribe this drug or medicine to be taken for a different ailment than the ones described above and/or to be taken in a different dosage. If for any reason you are unsure, have questions and/or are mixing medications, contact a medical professional before administering the medication. If you have any adverse side effects, be sure to contact a doctor or any other medical professional immediately.
