Fosamax, also known as Alendronate, is part of the group of medications called bishosphonates and help in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis for women who are postmenopausal. It has also been known to help in the increase of bone mass for men. It is used from the form of osteoporosis which was caused by steroid medicines like prednisone. It can also be used for treating Paget's disease in the bone for both men and women.

There are many different doses for men and women depending on what your symptoms are so make sure you check with your doctor before starting any dosage of Fosamax.

The tablets should be taken upon rising and at least a half hour before your first meal, beverage or medicine of the day. If tablet is too dry to swallow, then a small glass of water may accompany it. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not chewed or sucked. After ingesting, do not sleep for 30 minutes and a meal.

Fosamax should not be used if you are:

  • a person with abnormality of the esophagus that delays the emptying of the esophagus into the stomach
  • a person who cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes
  • allergic to any ingredient of this product
  • experiencing low blood calcium
  • experiencing reduced kidney function
