Nuvaring

Nuvaring, also known as Estradiol, is a contraceptive vaginal ring that releases a low dosage of progestin and estrogen over a 3 week time frame. Together, these hormonal contraceptives work to prevent ovulation (when ovaries produce eggs) and mucus production from the cervix which makes it difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus and fertilize the egg, anchor or grow.

Nuvaring is inserted into the vagina for a 3 week term and then removed for a week to allow the menstrual period to occur. A new ring is then inserted and the process is repeated. You should always try to insert the ring at the exact same time and day during the week for each cycle.

To insert the Nuvaring, make sure you have washed and cleaned your hands prior to commencing. Take the Nuvaring with your index finger and your thumb and insert it into the vagina after pushing the sides together first. When removing the ring, do not flush. Dispose of properly in a container where children and animals cannot come into contact with it. If the ring falls out during sex, re-insert as soon as dislodging has become apparent. If the ring has been out of the vagina for longer than 3 hours, there is a greater chance for pregnancy to occur.

If the ring has been out for longer than 3 hours and you are in the third week of the rings use then insert a new ring immediately, starting the next 3-week period of use. In this instance you may not experience a menstrual period, or you may experience spotting or breakthrough bleeding.

You can also have your period and insert a new ring no more than 7 days after the previous ring was removed or expelled - use this option only if the ring was in place continuously for the previous 7 days.
