Lovenox

Lovenox, also known as Enoxaparin, is a part of the group of medications known as antithrombotic agents and reduces the clotting ability of the blood, therefore, reducing the risks of blood clots forming in blood vessels due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is a condition which resides mostly in the leg, but the clots can travel to the lungs, blocking blood vessels there. The result is a pulmonary embolism, which is a very serious condition.

Lovenox is usually prescribed for bedridden patients who are there caused by a serious illness or surgery and have a great chance of developing DVT. It can still be prescribed for post heart attack patients and those who have unstable angina.

This should be injected under the skin. Contact your doctor to completely understand the steps for injection. These steps may go as follows:

  • Wash your hands and area around injection. Make sure solution for injection is clear and not cloudy.
  • Lie down and take a fold of skin in your lower abdomen by pinching it with your finger and thumb.
  • In a different place, inject the needle
  • Push the entire needle into the skin in a vertical manner and then press the plunger down.
  • After contents are completely emptied from the syringe, pull the needle out.
  • Apply light pressure to the area with a cotton swab, do not rub.
  • Dispose of needle and syringe in a puncture proof container (sharps). Each syringe and needle should only be used once.

Lovenox should not be used if you are:

  • allergic to enoxaparin or to any of the ingredients of the medication
  • allergic to other low molecular weight heparins or heparin
  • actively bleeding
  • receiving spinal or epidural anaesthesia and will be needing multiple doses of enoxaparin
  • currently has or previously had a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (decrease in the number of platelets) or a positive in vitro platelet-aggregation test while using enoxaparin

Also, you should not use Lovenox if you are a person who:

  • has injuries to and operations on the brain, spinal cord, eyes, or ears
  • has major blood clotting disorders
  • has other conditions or diseases involving an increased risk of bleeding
  • has severe uncontrolled high blood pressurehas an acute or sub-acute bacterial endocarditis (heart infection)
  • has an active gastric or duodenal ulcer
  • has eye problems due to diabetes or hemorrhage (bleeding)
  • has had a hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accident (bleeding into tissues of the brain)

You should contact your doctor if you experience any prolonged occurrences with any of these uncommon Lovenox side effects:

  • hardening of skin or lump at injection site
  • pain or redness at site of injection

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these very rare side effects:

  • purplish or reddish discolouration at the injection site
  • bleeding from a surgical wound
  • chest pain
  • dizziness
  • fainting
  • inability to move hands or feet or other parts of body (paralysis) or sudden back pain or tenderness
  • signs of bleeding (such as nosebleeds, blood in the urine, black tarry stools, bleeding gums, coughing up of blood, easy bruising, increased menstrual bleeding)
  • signs of a severe allergic reaction (such as difficulty breathing; skin rash or hives; swelling of the lips, mouth, or throat)
  • sudden change or loss of vision
  • sudden severe headache; loss of coordination; confusion; difficulty speaking or understanding speech; vision problems in one or both eyes; or weakness or numbness, especially on one side of the body
