Lamictal

Lamictal, also known as Lamotrigine, is a part of the group of medications called ant-epileptics and are used for helping manage seizures associated with epilepsy. Lamictal can be used alone or in combination with other drugs when traditional seizure management medications aren't working.

Lamotrigine has also been found to control rapid cycling and mixed bipolar states in persons with serious psychiatric disorders. This also includes post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD).

It should be started at a low dose and increased with time. If a dosage is missed, take it as soon as remembered or if you are close to the next dosage, skip the missed one and continue on the regular schedule. Never take two doses at the same time. 

Lamictal should not be used if you are:

  • sensitive or allergic to Lamictal or the medications mixed with it

You should contact your doctor if you experience any prolonged occurrences with any of these uncommon Lamictal side effects:

  • changes in weight
  • dizziness
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty sleeping
  • double vision
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • heartburn
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • weakness

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these very rare side effects:

  • liver damage: yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, fever, and fatigue
  • blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  • chest pain
  • increase in seizures
  • allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
  • confusion or changes in thought patterns
  • signs of bleeding: such as easy bruising, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, vomiting blood, blood in the urine, dark tarry stools
  • swelling of the hands or feet with shortness of breath
  • unusual muscle cramps, pain, or weakness
  • anxiety, confusion, depression, irritability, or other mood or mental changes
  • blurred or double vision or other changes in vision
  • clumsiness or unsteadiness
  • continuous, uncontrolled back-and-forth or rolling eye movements
  • dark-coloured urine
  • fever, chills, or sore throat
  • flu-like symptoms
  • infection
  • itching
  • memory loss
  • red or irritated eyes
  • skin rash
  • small red or purple spots on skin
  • sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips or in mouth
  • swelling of the hands, feet, ankles (if you are not having difficulty breathing)
