Actos

This oral anti-diabetic drug helps reduce sugar levels associated with type 2 diabetes by helping insulin work more effectively. It helps control the glycemic index and reduces insulin levels resulting in ridding the liver of sugar the body cannot process. By keeping blood sugar at a desired level, pioglitazone, the active ingredient in Actos, can help to prevent or delay the long-term problems associated with uncontrolled high blood sugar. If high blood pressure is kept unchecked for a long period of time, there is a good chance of developing kidney disease, eye problems, nerve problems and heart disease.

Shortly after starting Actos, your blood sugar should be reduced to the proper levels. The maximum lowering of blood sugar due to pioglitazone usually occurs about 14 weeks after starting it.

The common starting dose for adults is 15 mg or 30 mg taken once daily, with or without food, around the same time each day. Diet and exercise programs can and should be continued while taking the medication. Your doctor may decide to increase the dose of pioglitazone to 45 mg daily if the lower doses do not sufficiently reduce your blood sugar levels. The use and dose of pioglitazone for children might be different and should be discussed with a doctor.

You should contact your doctor if you experience any prolonged occurrences with any of these uncommon Actos side effects:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle soreness
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Problems with teeth
  • Swelling of feet or lower legs

You should be aware of signs of low blood sugar which include:

  • Anxiety
  • Behavior change similar to being drunk
  • Blurred vision
  • Cold sweats
  • Confusion
  • Continuous headache
  • Cool and pale skin
  • Difficulty thinking
  • Drowsiness
  • Excessive hunger
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Shakiness
  • Slurred speech
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
